The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced that the housing and flat policy under the government’s “Housing for All” program has been updated in line with the wishes of residents. The guidelines for the Family Housing program have now been published in the Government Gazette.
Under the new policy, flats in Malé City will be allocated to two groups: residents of Malé City and residents of other islands living in the capital. Applications for the flats will be open from April 15 to April 14.
The policy changes follow concerns raised by residents during a series of meetings, with adjustments made based on the feedback received. Key changes include:
- Individuals who previously received a one-room flat and have children under 18 may reapply if released under government policy.
- Households in two-room flats with children of both genders under 18 may apply again if they agree to vacate the flat according to the government’s decision.
- An applicant’s spouse can also apply even if they own more than 400 square feet of land outside the Greater Malé Region.
A total of 7,900 flats will be allocated across the Greater Malé Region. Of these:
- 4,000 flats for Malé residents
- 100 flats for single mothers and fathers with children under 18
- 100 flats for people with disabilities
- 250 flats for youth
- 100 flats for judiciary staff
- 100 flats for police, MNDF, and correctional staff
The government emphasized that providing housing for those without adequate accommodation remains a top priority of the current administration.
