China Condemns Large-Scale U.S. Arms Sales to Taiwan, Warns of Threat to Regional Stability

China has strongly opposed the United States’ recent decision to approve large-scale arms sales to Taiwan, saying the move violates the one-China principle and undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

He Fen, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives, said the arms sale contravenes the three China–U.S. Joint Communiqués and constitutes interference in China’s internal affairs. She said the decision sends “dangerous signals” to “Taiwan independence” forces and increases the risk of instability in the region.

He Fen said the Taiwan question concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting claims that the arms sales are intended to enhance security. According to her, continued weapons transfers escalate tensions and encourage miscalculation rather than maintaining peace.

She also criticized the financial and social impact of the arms deals on Taiwan, saying large-scale military spending places a heavy burden on public finances and diverts resources away from livelihoods, education, and social welfare. She said the weapons do not provide real security, but instead tie Taiwan to broader geopolitical competition.

Addressing China–U.S. relations, He Fen said the arms sales undermine mutual trust and raise the risk of strategic misjudgment. She added that such actions could fuel bloc confrontation and arms races in the Asia-Pacific region.

Reiterating Beijing’s position, she said Taiwan’s future lies in peaceful development under the one-China principle and warned against attempts to seek independence through external support.

She said China has decided to impose countermeasures under the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, targeting 20 U.S. military-industrial companies and 10 senior executives involved in supplying weapons to Taiwan. She stressed that the Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s interests and that China will firmly defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

She called on the United States to stop arms sales to Taiwan and cease interference in China’s internal affairs.
