President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s push to curb tobacco use, saying protecting citizens from tobacco and nicotine harm remains a top priority.
Speaking on World No Tobacco Day, the President said the government is working toward a “generational ban” on smoking, aimed at creating a tobacco-free society in the long term.
He also highlighted emerging challenges such as flavoured nicotine products and digital advertising, warning they are new threats to tobacco control efforts. The government, he added, will strengthen laws and enforcement to address them.
Officials also confirmed plans to expand smoking cessation services and increase smoke-free public spaces across the country.
The administration says the broader goal is to reduce tobacco dependence and promote a healthier society, calling for nationwide cooperation to support the initiative.
