The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has warned the public against using or selling cooking oil discarded by resorts, calling it a serious public health risk and a violation of the Food Safety Act.
The Authority said it received complaints that some parties are collecting and reselling used cooking oil from resorts and similar establishments for food preparation. MFDA reminded that this practice was banned in 2018.
According to the Food Safety Act, such oil fails to meet general food safety requirements and may be contaminated with non-halal substances.
MFDA has instructed businesses and individuals not to use or distribute discarded oil and warned that legal action will be taken against violators under the Food Safety Act.
