The Maldives has urged responsible use of Artificial Intelligence to promote peace and development at the UN Security Council.
Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla khaleel made the call during a high-level debate on AI and international peace. He said AI is reshaping the global balance of power and can empower even the smallest countries to process information effectively.
Khaleel highlighted AI’s potential to tackle climate change, improve education and healthcare, and boost economic growth. At the same time, he warned of risks such as exploitation, surveillance, violence, and conflicts.
He stressed that for small island nations, AI is vital for survival and success. Citing the Maldives’ National Digital Transformation Strategy, ‘Maldives 2.0’, he emphasized placing citizens at the center of innovation. The Minister concluded by urging all countries to use AI to advance peace, justice, and human dignity.
