The Maldives and India are aiming to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) before the end of 2026, Economic Development and Commerce Minister Mohamed Saeed has said.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Saeed said the first technical discussions have been completed, involving 102 government officials and 66 private sector representatives from 12 sectors.
He said the agreement will strengthen trade ties by improving the exchange of goods and services and reducing trade barriers.
The FTA is expected to create new opportunities for Maldivian fisheries exports, digital services, maritime industries, tourism, renewable energy, health, and education sectors.
The government says the agreement will help diversify the Maldivian economy and expand access for local products in international markets.
