Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has called for greater efforts to promote sustainable tourism in the Maldives.
In a video message, Thoriq highlighted this year’s theme: “Tourism and Sustainable Transitions.” He said tourism drives social and economic progress while supporting sustainable development.
He praised the Maldives’ tourism sector for making the country a top global destination. Thoriq stressed that protecting traditions and the environment requires the combined efforts of government, businesses, and citizens.
Citing global data, he noted the tourism industry reached $1.6 trillion last year, with tourist numbers expected to grow 3–5% this year. He added that the Maldives is expanding tourism while stepping up environmental protection.
