President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to charge domestic rates for lighting streets and public spaces in all cities and islands starting from next year.
Revealing this information in a post on ‘X’, the President stated that the decision to charge domestic rates for lighting public spaces in islands was made as part of the efforts to further develop the decentralization system. According to the President, this decision will be implemented from January 1 of the coming year.
He said that Fenaka and STELCO will now bill island councils at domestic rates. This, he added, would help local councils cut electricity costs and redirect the savings to other municipal services.
Previously, lighting for streets and public spaces in islands was billed at commercial rates, which is the rate charged to businesses.
The domestic rate for units under 100 is 1.25 rufiyaa. The commercial rate for the same number of units is 3.28 rufiyaa. With this decision by the President, the expenses incurred by island councils for lighting public spaces and streets will be significantly reduced.
