Maldives Participates in 60th UNHRC Session in Geneva
Geneva, Switzerland | September 8, 2025 — The Maldives has joined global leaders at the 60th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which began on Monday in Geneva and will continue through October 8, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The session was officially opened by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, who addressed a wide range of pressing global human rights concerns.
Leading the Maldivian delegation is Dr. Salma Rasheed, the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva and Vice President of the Human Rights Council for the Asia Pacific Group. The delegation is set to actively engage in key discussions and deliver national statements on various agenda items.

Key Focus Areas:
The Maldives plans to introduce a new resolution on the human rights impact of sea-level rise, highlighting its strong advocacy for climate action on behalf of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). It will also present its triennial resolution on the preventive role in promoting human rights.
As a member of both the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Maldives will support group statements condemning the global rise in human rights violations.
In its national capacity, the Maldives will:
- Address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine
- Participate in the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Myanmar
- Deliver a joint statement on behalf of SIDS under the Technical Assistance and Capacity-Building agenda
Additionally, Dr. Salma Rasheed is scheduled to chair multiple Council meetings, further emphasizing the Maldives’ leadership within the UNHRC. The country’s current term as a member of the 47-nation Council, a key UN body for the promotion and protection of human rights, will conclude at the end of this year.
