Surf League Comes to Laamu as New Event ‘Kerandoo’ Kicks Off This Wednesday

The Dhivehi Surf League (DSL) 2025 arrives in Laamu Maabaidhoo this week for ‘Kerandoo’, the second of three competitions in this year’s national surfing calendar.

Organized by the Maldives Surfing Association (MSA), the event has drawn a total of 40 surfers across two main categories: 20 in the U18 Junior Boys’ division and 20 in the Men’s Open. A separate bodyboarding division has also been added, with 15 competitors confirmed.

‘Kerandoo’ replaces the previously scheduled Kalhegalekodaa event, traditionally held at Tiger Stripes in G.Dh. Gadhdhoo. The new venue features “The Machine”, Maabaidhoo’s renowned right-hand barrel, offering a contrasting wave experience compared to Tiger Stripes.

“Laamu Atoll has some of the best waves in the country,” said MSA President Mohamed Sobah. “Bringing competition to Maabaidhoo is something the local surf community has looked forward to for a long time.”

Originally planned for early September, Kerandoo is now set to begin this Wednesday, continuing through the weekend. The finals will take place on Saturday afternoon, weather permitting.

Community Support & Hospitality

The Laamu Maabaidhoo Council, official host of the event, has announced that all participating athletes will be provided daily meals, including breakfast, lunch, and evening tea.

“This initiative reflects the welcoming spirit of Maabaidhoo and the important role of community in the growth of surfing in the Maldives,” the council stated.

The DSL 2025 series will conclude later this year with the Rannamaari Challenge in Malé.
