The foundation stone for the relocation of the commercial port to Thilafushi will be laid on 6 July, marking the start of one of the government’s key infrastructure projects.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed said the project is a major initiative under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to strengthen the Maldivian economy.
The minister noted that the existing commercial harbour, built around 40 years ago, no longer meets the country’s growing trade and population demands, making relocation essential.
He added that work is also progressing on the development of Kulhudhuffushi and Addu harbours, including expanded port areas, duty-free storage facilities and industrial zones to support economic growth in the atolls.
The government expects the new commercial port to ease congestion in Malé and improve cargo handling and clearance once completed.
