President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the Maldives’ drug rehabilitation system should be based on Islamic principles and community participation to achieve a lasting solution to substance abuse.
Speaking on the latest episode of the government’s The Pulse podcast, the President said rehabilitation should focus on strengthening religious values while addressing the root causes of drug addiction, rather than relying on short-term measures.
He stressed the importance of support from families and civil society, adding that the government is committed to helping recovering individuals reintegrate into society with dignity.
President Muizzu also said expanding the National Drug Agency’s capacity is a key priority, with plans to increase staffing, improve treatment services, and reduce waiting times. While 12 rehabilitation centres are currently operating nationwide, three more are planned as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen rehabilitation services.
