President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that work on the “Hope Island” project will begin soon, describing it as a modern rehabilitation facility for juvenile offenders.
Speaking on the The Pulse podcast, the President said the project in North Thilafalhu is currently undergoing proposal evaluation after delays in securing funding. He expressed confidence that results from the initiative will be seen within the current term.
The President said addressing youth crime requires tackling root causes such as housing challenges and limited income opportunities, alongside support for small businesses.
He also outlined key features of Hope Island, including capacity for 700 youths, a 15-hectare reclaimed site, and facilities for education, healthcare, sports, and rehabilitation programmes.
The project will provide basic and religious education, therapy services, and structured training. President Muizzu added that youths at the facility will undergo long-term rehabilitation programmes aimed at preparing them for future roles in society.
