The Maldives’ historic Hirigalu Mosques are expected to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List by the end of 2027, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed has said.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister Heena said the nomination documents submitted by the Maldives have been accepted by UNESCO after meeting the required criteria.
A UNESCO evaluation team is scheduled to visit the Maldives in September to inspect the nominated sites and assess the proposal.
The five mosques included in the nomination are Malé Friday Mosque, Ihavandhoo Historical Mosque, Meedhoo Barahi Friday Mosque, Fenfushi Historical Mosque and Isdhoo Asari Mosque.
The minister said the listing would be a major honour for the Maldives, with preparations underway ahead of the final evaluation process.
