The Criminal Court has convicted four men in connection with the abduction and torture of a man inside a house in Malé City in 2024, sentencing them to lengthy prison terms.
Five individuals were charged over the case. During the investigation, the victim alleged he was lured to a house, abducted, assaulted and tortured, including having his left little finger severed with a pipe cutter.
Although the victim later withdrew key parts of his testimony during the trial, the court ruled that his original statements to investigators, supported by other evidence, were more credible and convicted the accused.
One defendant was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon, while two others received 7 years, 11 months and 24 days in prison. Another defendant was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for failing to provide assistance to a person in need without a valid reason.
All of the convicted men had denied the charges during the trial.
