President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Shakeel as a member of the Elections Commission to fill a vacant position on the commission.
Shakeel took his oath of office at a ceremony held at the President’s Office before Supreme Court Justice Mohamed Saleem. Following the swearing-in, President Muizzu presented him with his letter of appointment.
The vacancy arose following the resignation of former Elections Commission President Fuad Thaufeeq and former commission member Mohamed Zahid. Parliament approved Shakeel’s appointment after his nomination was submitted by the President.
Shakeel previously served as a member of the Elections Commission from 2014 to 2018 and has also held several senior positions within the commission.
During his parliamentary vetting, Shakeel pledged to carry out his duties independently and said he would work with all political parties to help address electoral issues through dialogue.
With his appointment, the commission has returned to its full membership. However, the post of Elections Commission President remains vacant and will be filled following parliamentary approval.
