PayPal is now available in the Maldives, allowing people and businesses to receive payments from around the world.
At the launch ceremony, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu called it a major step for the country’s digital economy, saying it removes a long-standing challenge faced by freelancers, entrepreneurs and creatives.
He said the service will help Maldivians sell products and services internationally and receive payments directly in the Maldives.
The President said the launch supports Vision 2040 and efforts to grow the digital economy, alongside projects such as the Divaar submarine cable.
PayPal is expected to benefit freelancers, small businesses, guesthouses, dive centres and artists who work with international customers.
President Muizzu also announced that the Creator Hub in Malé will open on November 11 and declared 2026 the National Year of Innovation.
