The Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives has praised the people of Kinbidhoo for successfully balancing tradition and progress, describing the island as a place where “hope is quietly taking root and growing.”
The ambassador visited Kinbidhoo in Thaa Atoll during the Eid al-Adha holidays at the invitation of the island council and joined residents in a range of cultural and community celebrations.
Reflecting on the visit, he said it was not just the Maldives’ natural beauty that stood out, but the determination of the people to preserve their culture while embracing new opportunities.
“The beauty of the Maldives lies in its oceans, but it is not defined by them alone,” he said. “What left the deepest impression on me was a community preserving its traditions while embracing the future.”
Among the highlights of the trip was Kinbidhoo School, where the ambassador learned how a hydroponic farming project introduced to students eventually spread to households across the island.
“The true meaning of education lies not only in teaching knowledge, but also in allowing knowledge to take root like a seed and benefit entire families and communities,” he said.
The ambassador also visited the island’s health centre, power station and historical sites, expressing particular admiration for the island’s growing use of solar energy and efforts to preserve its heritage.
He said Kinbidhoo reflects a broader story about development in the Maldives.
“The country’s development is reflected not only in infrastructure and economic growth, but also in the confidence and aspirations found within ordinary communities,” he said.
Concluding his visit, the ambassador expressed optimism about the island’s future and the continued partnership between China and the Maldives.
