Minister Heena Waleed has stated that Maldivian laws will be fully enforced against anyone who violates them, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law.
Her remarks follow the sentencing of two journalists for contempt of court in connection with a court order related to the “Aisha” documentary.
In a social media post, Heena said freedom of expression and press freedom are protected rights in the Maldives, but emphasized that such freedoms must be exercised responsibly and not used to spread false allegations or defame individuals.
She added that while journalists have every right to question the President and public officials, no individual is permitted to violate a court order.
Heena said enforcing court rulings and existing laws is essential to safeguard the rights of citizens and maintain public trust in the justice system.
