The Addu Regional Free Zone has been officially inaugurated in Addu City.
The facility was inaugurated during a ceremony held at Addu High School by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan. The project forms part of the government’s plan to establish dedicated free zones in the northern and southern regions of the Maldives.
Coinciding with the launch, Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for warehousing and related commercial activities within the free zone opened on May 13 and will remain open until June 11. Interested businesses will later be invited to submit detailed proposals outlining planned operations, land requirements and lease terms.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Saeed said the initiative is aimed at transforming Addu City into a regional trade hub, creating employment opportunities and expanding private sector investment. He also said the project would support regional development and reduce economic reliance on the Greater Malé area.
Officials added that fencing and demarcation work on a 20,000-square-foot operational area is currently underway.
