The government has proposed changes to the Decentralisation Act to include waste management under council responsibilities.
The bill, submitted by North Fuvahmulah MP Hamad Abdulla, was presented to Parliament for its first reading today. It seeks to add waste management services to the list of basic services provided by councils, alongside electricity, water and sewerage.
The amendment also proposes changing the status of Local Government Authority administrative staff to civil servants. Under the bill, they would be appointed by the Civil Service Commission with advice from the LGA CEO.
Officials said the changes are part of broader reforms to local governance following recent amendments to the Decentralisation Act.
