The state has appealed the acquittal of Amin Construction Pvt Ltd in a money laundering case linked to former Football Association of Maldives president Bassam Adeel Jaleel.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said the Criminal Court failed to hear key witnesses and improperly assessed evidence. It has asked the High Court to overturn the ruling and order a retrial.

The case involves USD 1.2 million in FAM funds allegedly exchanged through the company and linked to two Amin Avenue apartments in Hulhumalé. The lower court ruled there was no proof the funds were used to buy the apartments.

The state has also sought a temporary freeze on the properties.

While Amin Construction was cleared, Bassam was convicted, sentenced to 23 years in prison, fined MVR 44 million, and ordered to repay USD 1.2 million to FAM.
