Ahmed Nimal has passed away at the age of 62 after suffering a stroke.

Nimal was undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after collapsing while riding his motorcycle. His condition worsened in recent days and he was placed on a ventilator.

A pioneering figure in Maldivian cinema, Nimal directed more than 22 films since his debut Effectu in 1984. He also worked as an editor, writer and producer. His 1993 film City, which he wrote, directed and starred in, remains one of his notable works.

In 1991, the government honoured him with the National Award of Recognition for his contribution to the film industry.

His passing marks a major loss for the Maldivian film community.
