The Maldives has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state, calling it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel made the remarks at the 22nd Extraordinary Meeting of OIC Foreign Ministers held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The meeting was convened to discuss Israel’s move to recognise Somaliland as a separate state.
The Minister said the decision undermines Somalia’s independence and violates international law. He described the move as a clear breach of international norms and the United Nations Charter.
Khaleel said the Maldivian government is deeply concerned by Israel’s actions. He also pointed to the wider situation in the Middle East, noting that Israel’s disregard for international law is especially troubling at a time when violence in the Palestinian territories continues to escalate.
He said the issue is a serious concern for the entire Muslim Ummah.
