The Maldives Police Service has revealed that Maldivians are involved in smuggling drugs into the country from overseas.
Speaking at a press conference today, Chief Inspector of Police and Head of Drugs and Substance Control, Ahmed Naaif, said authorities have observed Maldivians smuggling drugs from abroad, particularly from countries in the Southeast Asian region.
He said drugs are being trafficked into the Maldives through air cargo, sea cargo, and concealed within electronic equipment. According to Naaif, three Maldivians have so far been identified in connection with drug smuggling from overseas, some of whom have prior criminal records.
Naaif added that investigations are being conducted in cooperation with neighboring and other countries, and that police operations will continue in accordance with the law.
