President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said rent and fine relief for social housing flats will be eased carefully, without causing losses to the state.
The President made the remarks during a visit to meet residents of Hulhumalé Phase I last night. The meeting followed recent government decisions to waive fines for unpaid Hiyaa flat rent and reduce rents for FDC flats.
He said the measures aim to ease hardships faced by residents struggling to pay rent and fines. However, residents raised concerns that fully waiving fines could harm state revenue and encourage non-payment.
The President said the government will provide relief only after careful study. He stressed that no decision will be taken that could damage the Maldivian economy.
He also rejected claims that flats are awarded based on political loyalty. The President said all allocations follow rules and regulations, without political influence.
