The government has begun a major land reclamation and beach protection project in Raa Atoll Dhuvaafaru to address housing shortages and coastal erosion.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu marked the start of the project during his visit to the island for Fishermen’s Day. Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib officially inaugurated the works.
The project includes the reclamation of 15.8 hectares of land, along with the construction of 812 metres of revetment and 450 metres of groynes. The MVR 172.93 million project is scheduled for completion within 360 days.
Officials say the reclaimed land will create new housing and industrial opportunities for Dhuvaafaru’s 5,047 residents. Work has also begun on the island’s Waste Management Centre alongside the project.
