Hanimaadhoo International Airport has officially opened its new terminal, inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and India’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Mohan Naidu.
The first aircraft to land on the upgraded runway was a Maldivian Airlines A320, captained by a pilot from Haa Dhaalu Atoll—symbolizing a proud moment for the northern region.
The new 10,380-square-meter terminal features state-of-the-art facilities and can accommodate up to 1.3 million passengers annually. The upgraded airport is also capable of handling major aircraft types, including Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
Valued at USD 136.6 million, the project is one of the most significant infrastructure developments in the Maldives.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, MACL CEO Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed described the airport as a transformative project for the north, calling it “the key to the development of the northern region.”
The airport is expected to serve as a major gateway to northern Maldives, unlocking new economic and tourism opportunities for the region.
