Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was presented with the Special Shield of Honor today for his leadership and courage during the 1988 terrorist attack on the Maldives.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu handed over the award during this year’s official Victory Day ceremony in Malé.
The honor recognizes Gayoom’s decisive actions in defending the nation and his efforts to commemorate the bravery of soldiers and civilians. Eight military personnel and eleven civilians lost their lives during the attack.
Victory Day, observed on November 3, marks the day Maldivian forces successfully repelled the foreign backed terrorist invasion, safeguarding the country’s independence.
