The government has allocated over MVR 8.8 billion to the health sector in the 2026 state budget, making it the highest funded area for the upcoming year.

Finance Minister Moosa Zameer presented the 2026 state budget to the People’s Majlis, with the health sector receiving MVR 8.8 billion. Out of this, MVR 1.15 billion is set aside for medical assistance and equipment, and MVR 15 million for health research.

Under the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP), MVR 917.7 million has been allocated to health projects almost double the previous year’s MVR 466.9 million. An additional MVR 102 million will fund mental well-being and rehabilitation services.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that the funds will be used to upgrade regional hospitals to tertiary level, build new facilities, and expand staffing across islands. He previously stated that health would be the top priority in the 2026 budget, followed by education.
