Air India, India’s national carrier, began operations from Velana International Airport’s new passenger terminal, Terminal 1, on November 1, 2025.

A special ceremony was held to mark the occasion, attended by Indian Ambassador J. Balasubramanian, Air India’s Airport Manager Jainder Singh Rana, and MACL officials.

Air India’s check-in counters were inaugurated, with gifts for 118 departing passengers and a warm cultural welcome for 132 arriving on flight AI2239.

The airline first began flights to the Maldives in 1976. With Air India’s move, 18 airlines now operate from Terminal 1, as MACL works to deliver top quality service to all travelers.
