Two deputy commissioners of Maldives Customs Service have been removed on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s orders following a parliamentary probe into cigarette smuggling.
The 241 Committee of the People’s Majlis investigated the smuggling of cigarette cartons on a vessel owned by The Hawks Private Limited. The inquiry also found that cartons were released from a bonded warehouse in violation of customs regulations.
The committee said the violations caused loss of state revenue and breached the law.
Deputy Commissioners Abdulla Waheed and Mahmood Riyaz were dismissed based on the findings.
The President also instructed Customs to take disciplinary action against three additional employees and report progress to the Majlis.
