The Government of Maldives has reiterated support for peaceful protests but condemned protesters who defied police orders and entered Majeedhee Magu.
Authorities said freedom of assembly is protected under the Constitution and the Freedom of Assembly Act, but rallies must follow designated routes approved by police.
Despite repeated reminders, protesters forced their way into the capital’s busiest street, broke barricades, and seized police shields.
The government said police acted with restraint to protect public safety and stressed that protest rights must be exercised peacefully and within the law.
