President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said some recent increases in the prices of essential goods were driven by political motives rather than shortages. He pledged that his government will not allow such practices to continue.
Speaking in V. Felidhoo on Thursday, President Muizzu pointed to recent spikes in fruit prices, noting that claims of dollar shortages were unfounded.
He said the government has added 23 items to the list of essentials and tasked the State Trading Organization (STO) with bulk imports to stabilize costs.
The president said his administration will take whatever measures are needed to protect the public from unnecessary price hikes.
