A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, but the Maldives is not at risk, according to the Maldivian Meteorological Service.
In a post shared on X, the Met Office stated that the earthquake occurred 9,421 kilometers from the Maldives, on Kamchatka’s northeast coast, and poses no direct threat to the country.
Foreign media reported that a tsunami warning was initially issued for the region, but authorities have since confirmed that the danger has passed.
The Kamchatka Peninsula was also hit by a powerful earthquake last July, which generated a tsunami and prompted evacuations from Hawaii to Japan.
