President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a fixed percentage of state revenue will be allocated to the judiciary, in a bid to ensure full financial independence and strengthen judicial autonomy in the Maldives.
In a social media post, President Muizzu said financial independence is key to an independent judiciary. He noted that the matter was discussed during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, where steps to provide both financial and administrative autonomy for the judiciary were outlined.
According to the president, the changes will be reflected in next year’s budget. The judiciary will receive its funds as a block grant, giving it full authority over expenditures. He added that the allocation will exceed previous budget ceilings.
According to the president, preparations are underway on the legal, technical, and structural changes required for the reform.
