Muizzu Moves to Reduce Benefits for Former Leaders

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to reduce certain benefits currently provided to former presidents and former members of the People’s Majlis, while also standardising pension rules for state retirees.

According to the President, amendments will be submitted to the Majlis to revise existing laws and remove some benefits granted by law to these former officeholders. He said the move is part of broader efforts to ensure fairness and transparency in state benefits.

In addition, President Muizzu stated that work is underway to standardise pension regulations for state retirees. Under the proposed changes, pension benefits would be suspended if a retiree returns to another state position, ensuring a consistent and equitable system. The reforms aim to make pension distribution more sustainable and align with international best practices in public sector management.

The announcement comes amid public concern over state expenditures on former presidents and Majlis members, which recently gained attention on social media. The President has not specified when the proposed amendments will be submitted to the Majlis.
