The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has decided to increase the number of Hafiz examination committees to speed up the assessment process for students memorising the Holy Quran.
Speaking at a press conference, Islamic Affairs Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said the examination system at the Centre for the Holy Quran must be expanded to accommodate the growing number of students pursuing Quran memorisation.
He said the additional committees will allow more students to sit examinations at the same time, reducing waiting periods and helping students obtain Hafiz certification more quickly.
The minister also highlighted efforts to address the shortage of permanent imams in mosques across the country. He said discussions are underway to create more employment opportunities, introduce annual imam examinations and strengthen pathways for those interested in the field.
According to the ministry, more than 1,400 students are currently memorising the Holy Quran. The government has also increased the special allowance provided to Hafiz as part of efforts to encourage Quran memorisation in the Maldives.
