President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said efforts to rebuild the fisheries industry are progressing successfully, with positive results already beginning to emerge.
Speaking on the latest episode of the podcast “The Pulse”, President Muizzu said the fisheries sector was in a poor state when the current administration took office.
He said the government has undertaken extensive work to revive the industry and improve the livelihoods of fishermen.
The President stated that maintaining MIFCO’s fish purchase price at MVR 20 per kilogram remains a key objective. He also expressed hope that fishermen would receive even better prices in the future.
Addressing concerns raised by fishermen, President Muizzu said work is underway to resume MIFCO’s purchase of Bodukanneli and determine a sustainable price for the product.
He also noted ongoing efforts to secure permanent export tariff benefits for Maldivian fish products in the UK market.
