President Calls for Urgent Action on Ocean Health

In a message marking World Oceans Day, the President said the future of the planet depends on healthy oceans, noting that the Maldives’ economy, food security and environmental sustainability are closely tied to the marine environment.

He highlighted ongoing efforts by the Maldives to promote sustainable fisheries, expand marine research and monitor reef health, while stressing the importance of coral reef conservation and restoration.

The President also warned of the growing impacts of ocean warming, coral bleaching and coastal erosion, calling for swift and effective international cooperation to address climate-related threats.

Referring to this year’s World Oceans Day theme, he urged countries to strengthen their relationship with the oceans and work together to safeguard them for future generations.
