President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to restrict access to certain social media platforms for children under the age of 16.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the President said the move is aimed at protecting children and young people from online threats such as cyberbullying and grooming. He noted that the issue has become a growing concern worldwide.

The President said the government will consult relevant institutions, NGOs and the public before implementing the measures. He added that countries such as Australia have already taken similar steps.

According to the President, work on the initiative will begin within a year through discussions with social media companies. He stressed that the move is not intended to slow digital development, but to ensure children can benefit from the internet while being protected from harmful content.
