Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
Saleem was elected during a secret ballot held at Parliament to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim.
He contested the post as the nominee of the ruling PNC, while Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad was nominated by the MDP. According to the voting results, Saleem secured 62 votes, while Ziyad received 10 votes.
A five-member committee oversaw the voting process. Following his election, Saleem will serve alongside Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla in leading parliamentary proceedings.
