The bodies of the last two Italian tourists trapped in an underwater cave in V. Atoll have been recovered.

The recovery was completed six days after the divers became trapped inside the cave near Alimatha. Their location was identified earlier, but the depth and dangerous conditions made the operation difficult.

A team of experienced Finnish cave divers carried out the high-risk recovery with support from the Italian government. They used specialised equipment, including rebreathers, underwater scooters and life-support systems.

The Finnish team brought the bodies out of the cave to a depth of 30 metres, where MNDF and police dive teams completed the recovery.

Five Italian divers died in the incident, while MNDF Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahdi also passed away during the rescue operation.
