The Addu Regional Free Zone has been officially inaugurated to support economic development in the southern Maldives.
The project was launched at a ceremony held at Addu High School by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and Home Minister Ali Ihsaan. Officials said the initiative is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to develop the south as an economic hub.
A total of 1.7 hectares from the Hithadhoo Port area has been allocated for the free zone, with 20,000 square feet set aside for the first phase.
The zone will allow goods to be stored and maintained without duties until they are re-exported. MPL said the area will support duty-free storage, vehicle refurbishment, manufacturing, bonded storage and re-export services.
The project is being carried out with MPL, the Economic Ministry, Customs and other relevant agencies.
