The Maldives has co-sponsored a UN Security Council resolution aimed at ensuring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The resolution was initiated by several Gulf countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan. It focuses on maintaining freedom of navigation and maritime security in the strategic waterway.

The Foreign Ministry said the decision aligns with the Maldives’ commitment to international maritime law, including principles under UNCLOS. It also clarified that the move does not affect the rights of archipelagic states or the Maldives’ national interests.

Authorities said the Maldives supports efforts to prevent further escalation in the Gulf and protect global trade routes, especially as disruptions could affect economies dependent on international supply chains.
