Taiwan, Cross-Strait Ties Back in Focus Ahead of May 20

May 20 marks the inauguration anniversary of Taiwan region leader Lai Ching-te, bringing renewed international focus to cross-Strait relations and their impact on regional stability.

Cross-Strait relations refer to ties between mainland China and Taiwan — an issue that continues to shape political and security discussions across Asia.

Since taking office in 2024, Lai’s administration has maintained its position on self-governance, while Beijing has continued stressing the One-China principle and opposing separatist activities. The issue remains closely watched due to its wider impact on regional security, diplomacy, and economic stability.

For the Maldives, the topic also carries diplomatic significance.

The Maldives has maintained the One-China policy since establishing diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China in 1972. The government has repeatedly reaffirmed that it recognises the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China and views Taiwan as part of China.

China remains one of the Maldives’ key partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, tourism, trade, and development projects.

Analysts say stable cross-Strait relations are important not only for China and Taiwan, but also for countries across the region, as tensions can influence trade routes, investment, and broader Indo-Pacific stability.

As attention turns to May 20, the developments are expected to remain a key topic in regional and international discussions.
