The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission has set a six-month deadline for media outlets to update registration records.

The move follows a new regulation placing the media registry under the commission’s authority. Officials introduced updated guidelines covering newspapers, magazines, newsletters and journals, including digital platforms.

Outlets must appoint an editor and a responsible party who meet required qualifications. Registrations will remain valid for five years, with automatic cancellation if operations cease for 12 months.

New applications will receive responses within 30 days. Authorities also require annual reports from all registered outlets.

Officials said failure to update records within the deadline will result in cancellation of registration. The framework also allows outlets to charge access fees, subject to regulatory approval.
