Land reclamation in Hithaadhoo, Baa Atoll has been set to begin to address land shortages.
The project was awarded to MTCC at a cost of around USD 8.9 million. Authorities plan to reclaim 15 hectares of land from the lagoon.
Preparatory work is already underway, with equipment delivered to the island and boundary works in progress.
The development will include coastal protection measures such as revetment and groynes to prevent erosion.
Officials have said the project will create space for housing and economic activities, with completion expected within just over a year.
