At least two people has been killed after powerful storms and tornadoes swept across parts of the United States.
A tornado killed an elderly couple in Lake Village, Indiana after tearing through the rural community south of Chicago. Authorities said the storm caused “total devastation”, destroying homes and trapping residents.
More than a dozen tornadoes were reported across Texas, Illinois and Indiana on Tuesday. One powerful tornado that struck Kankakee, Illinois was given a preliminary EF-3 rating by the National Weather Service.
The storms also produced giant hail, with one hailstone measuring six inches in diameter, possibly a new state record.
The severe weather later moved toward the Gulf Coast, spawning more tornadoes and knocking down trees and power lines. Nearly 150,000 customers lost power overnight.
A tornado watch remains in effect for parts of Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Georgia as the storm threat continues.
