The Ministry of Economic Trade and Development has signed an agreement with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to launch duty free food and essential goods at Hithadhoo Commercial Harbour.
President Mohamed Muizzu has said the service will begin in February 2026.
The deal creates a bonded area at the harbour for duty-free storage of food and basic goods. It will also offer bonded warehouse services for resorts in the south, cutting costs and improving supply chains.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said regional ports need business driven services to reach their full potential. MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan said the move will also help ease pressure on the Malé Commercial Port.
